Future dairy Sires - Young Jersey Bulls

These bulls were on a property I used to deal with as a rental manager. The grazing was leased and these stroppy youngsters were used to keep the grass down until they were put in with the Dairy Cows to put in calf for the following season. Jersey Bulls don't have wonderful temperaments. I'd rather deal with a Hereford or Red Devon Bull than a grumpy Jersey. There has been a move in dairying over the last few years towards cross breeding Jersey and Fresian. I have heifers here. Some refer to this type as Kiwicross or Kiwi Cows. Recently some Kiwicross Bulls were added onto Livestock Improvement NZ Genetics' list of A.I. Bulls.

  1. I'd always though Jerseys were a more easy going cattle! I know holstiens have a record of being ill tempered, but havent heard that of Jersy....well heck any animal can be dangerous, but when they weigh over a thousand pounds then its really dangerous. Our biggest bull is over 2800 pounds, and if ever got it in him to be mean, look out, we wouldnt win that battle! Zeus is so big due to the large amount of Marchigiana in him, huge animals! And as you know, Norm has expertise in the area of cow injury now! LOL Me? I'll stay out of the way!

  3. Well any bull is dangerous with all that testosterone running through them, get one on a grumpy day, well its over! Are jersey heifers the same temperment? Be careful with that bull you have, never let your guard down, thats what gets you hurt

  4. I never trust Bulls and that is never. I always keep between the fence and the bull and have a cattle stick. Jersey heifers are great to have. NIce kind quiet and gentle. If you check out that link on the A.I. Services you can now get Jersey Semen in the US through LIC there. They've gone global awesome!!!! Jersey cross are nice too.

  5. Can I make a very-townie statement and say -- I found the photo fascinating, truly, 'cause I've never seen a Jersey bull. Jersey cows, yes, but not the bulls (see, I told you that was a very-townie statement to make!) Is the shape of the neck a feature of the bulls, or just the way he was towards the lens?

  6. Hello Ice,

The neck gets very muscled up as the bull matures. Those bulls were around eighteen months old and quite nicely put together I just don't like Jersey Bulls. The cows are fine.

  7. Hey Timespanner I wish I had a good picture of our biggest bull, he is a marchigiana bull, and weighs close to if not over 3000 pounds, absolutly humongous! And no thats not a townie question! most people dont realize how big a bull is until they are close to one!
